Email signature banners that get clicks: a practical guide
Your team’s outgoing email is a channel most companies ignore. A banner under every signature reaches customers, partners and prospects who already know you. It works best when it is treated like a campaign, not decoration.
Pick one message
One banner, one message, one action. “Register for the 14 November webinar” works. A banner that announces a product, a hiring drive and an award at once gets ignored.
Design for a small space
- Display it at 400–600 pixels wide and around 80–120 pixels tall.
- Use a short headline in large text and a clear action such as “Register” or “See the case study”.
- Save it at twice the display size so it is sharp on high-density screens, and keep the file small.
- Remember dark mode: avoid thin dark text on a transparent background.
- Add alt text that says the same thing as the banner, for readers whose images are blocked.
Match the audience
A sales team’s emails go to prospects; a support team’s go to existing customers. Target banners by department: a case study for sales, a new feature guide for support, a careers page for recruiters.
Give it an end date
Banners go stale quickly. Schedule every campaign with a start and an end date so it switches on and off without anyone remembering to change signatures. Rotate between two banners if you want to compare designs.
Measure honestly
Clicks are measurable: each banner link goes through a tracked short link. Impressions are estimates, because mail apps cache and block images. So:
- Compare banners against each other rather than against an industry benchmark.
- Look at clicks per person and department to see where the banner works.
- Use the ROI calculator to turn clicks into a rough pipeline estimate, and treat it as a range.
Respect the reader
Keep banners off sensitive threads, such as support escalations or legal correspondence, by targeting departments carefully. A good signature banner is something people do not mind seeing in every email.
