Gmail signature at the bottom of replies? Move it up
Gmail puts your signature after the quoted thread in replies by default. To move it directly under your reply, open Settings > See all settings > General, find Signature, tick Insert this signature before quoted text in replies and remove the "--" line that precedes it, and click Save Changes. If you send from more than one address, check the defaults for each one.
This shows up repeatedly in Google's own help community and on Stack Exchange: "my signature appears at the bottom of the thread, not under my reply".
Step by step
- Open Gmail on a computer and click the gear icon, then See all settings.
- On the General tab, scroll to Signature.
- Make sure a signature is selected under On reply/forward use.
- Tick Insert this signature before quoted text in replies and remove the "--" line that precedes it.
- Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
If it still looks wrong
- The setting is ticked but the signature is still at the bottom. Gmail hides the quoted thread behind a "..." button. The signature can be collapsed with it. See Gmail signature hidden behind three dots.
- No signature at all in replies. Under Signature defaults, the reply/forward option may be set to "No signature".
- Different behaviour per address. If you send from aliases, each one has its own defaults. See Gmail signature per alias.
- On your phone. The Gmail app uses its own mobile signature. See Gmail app signatures.
For a whole team
The "before quoted text" option is a checkbox in each person's Gmail settings. Pushing a signature centrally does not tick it for them, so include it in your rollout instructions.
Where Sendoff fits
Sendoff builds the signature and, on Google Workspace, writes it into each person's Gmail settings through the Gmail API, including aliases. The "before quoted text" checkbox stays with each user. Build one in the Gmail signature generator, or see the Gmail install guide.
FAQ
Will moving the signature remove the "--" line? Yes. The same option removes it.
Does this affect new emails? No. New emails always place the signature at the end of what you write.
