Gmail app signature on Android and iPhone: setup steps

Set the mobile signature in the Gmail app on Android or iPhone, see what new messages use when it is empty, and test what the phone actually sends.

The Gmail app on Android and iPhone has its own signature field, separate from the one you set on a computer. Type the text there and tap OK (Android) or Back (iPhone) to save. If you never create a mobile signature, new messages from the app use your computer signature. Google's help describes the mobile field as text, so test any logo or table before you rely on it.

Set the mobile signature on Android

  1. Open the Gmail app and tap Menu in the top left.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Settings.
  3. Tap the Google Account you want to change.
  4. Tap Mobile signature.
  5. Type your signature, then tap OK.

The setting belongs to each Google Account. If you send from two accounts in the app, repeat the steps for the second one.

Set the mobile signature on iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Gmail app, tap Menu, then tap Settings.
  2. Under Compose and Reply, tap Signature settings.
  3. Turn on Mobile Signature.
  4. Add or edit the text.
  5. Tap Back to save.

What new messages use when the mobile signature is empty

Google's help says that if you do not create a signature in the Gmail app, new messages use the signature you set up on your computer. That covers the case where you never created one. The help does not say what happens after you delete the mobile text, so test that case too.

What the help pages leave out

Google describes the mobile signature as text, such as contact information or a favorite quote. The pages do not say whether the mobile field keeps bold text, links or images. They also do not say whether the 10,000-character limit they give for the computer signature applies on the phone.

Those gaps matter if your computer signature has a logo or a table. Whether that signature shows correctly in messages sent from the app is not documented, so check it yourself.

How to test a message from your phone

  1. Set the mobile signature to a short test line, such as "Mobile test".
  2. Send a message from the app to an address you own.
  3. Open it in Gmail on the web and in a desktop mail app. Check the text, any link, and whether an image appears.
  4. Clear the mobile signature, send another test, and compare it with the computer signature.

Keep the result of each test. If you change the signature later, you can repeat the same two sends.

Troubleshooting

The logo from my computer signature does not show on my phone. The help pages do not promise that an image set on the computer appears in messages sent from the app. Use a text signature with a link to your website on the phone if the test fails.

I changed the computer signature, but the phone still shows old text. The mobile field is separate. Edit it in the app's settings for each account.

One of my accounts has no signature. Check each Google Account in the app. The Android steps apply to each account separately.

How Sendoff handles this

Sendoff writes the signature into the Gmail sending identity through the Gmail API's sendAs setting. That is the signature Gmail uses on the web and on the computer. Sendoff does not write the Gmail app's mobile signature field, so set that one in the app as described above.

Build the HTML signature in the email signature generator. For team deployment, see the Gmail integration and the Google Workspace integration.
